CLINICA LINFOLOGICA ITALIANA
The collegiate lymphology consultation allows for the formulation of a diagnosis and the appropriate treatment protocol
The Clinica Linfologica Italiana in Padua has developed an extremely effective methodological approach.
The diagnosis and subsequent treatment protocol are always the result of a thorough multidisciplinary lymphological examination.
The team at the Clinica Linfologica Italiana provides a diagnosis of lymphoedema, lipoedema, or any other related condition only after a precise clinical assessment and advanced instrumental examinations.
Thanks to this multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to treat, reduce, stabilise, and manage lymphoedema, lipoedema, and other lymphovascular conditions.
Thus, the multidisciplinary lymphological consultation is the first step in the treatment protocol, guiding the patient toward either the Lymphoedema Programme or the Lipoedema Programme.
HOW DOES THE INITIAL COLLEGIATE LYMPHOLOGY CONSULTATION WORK IN PADUA?
The initial lymphological consultation is a collegiate, or team-based, visit that lasts approximately 90 minutes and is conducted by a physician specializing in lymphology, a therapist, and, if necessary, another specialist related to the patient’s primary condition (such as a breast specialist, urologist, or oncologist).
At the Clinica Linfologica Italiana in Padua, the initial lymphology consultation consists of two phases:
- Clinical Assessment: In this phase, the patient’s medical history is analysed to understand their clinical background, study their case, listen to their experiences, and determine if there are any contraindications to treatment.
- Instrumental Examinations: Various advanced instrumental tests are conducted to evaluate the stage of lymphoedema or lipoedema, gathering precise data before initiating the treatment.
At the end of the initial consultation, the diagnosis is shared with the patient, indicating the type, stage, and clinical form of the condition. The most appropriate treatment is then established based on the latest international guidelines.
The Clinica Linfologica Italiana in Padua offers a protocol based on different treatments, which are combined in a highly personalized manner: massages, bandaging, gym and aquatic exercise, lymphoedema walking, mechanical therapies, nutritional counseling, psychological support, and sessions aimed at increasing awareness of the condition and effective management strategies.

WHAT TESTS ARE INCLUDED IN THE INITIAL LYMPHOLOGICAL CONSULTATION IN PADUA?
At our clinic in Padua, the multidisciplinary lymphological consultation always includes:
- a comprehensive clinical examination.
- Careful recording of the patient’s medical history.
- Measurement of limb circumferences and photographic documentation.
- Adipometry.
- Digital evaluation of foot support.
- Segmental bioimpedance analysis.
- Possible phlebology consultation with Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs
In addition to these clinical tests, which are performed during the initial lymphological consultation directly at our clinic in Padua, further assessments may be prescribed, including lymphoscintigraphy, fluoroscopy, genetic testing, endocrinological consultation, internal medicine consultation, breast examination, gynecological consultation, or various laboratory tests.
With the exception of lymphoscintigraphy, which requires the use of a radioactive contrast medium and must therefore be performed in a hospital, all other assessments can be conveniently scheduled at the adjacent Poliambulatrio Arcella.
WHEN IS IT USEFUL TO HAVE AN INITIAL CONSULTATION?
If lymphoedema or lipoedema is suspected, the initial collegiate lymphological consultation is the first step to take; through clinical evaluation, a clear and accurate diagnosis can be obtained.
If the patient has undergone oncological surgery involving lymph node removal, it is advisable to have an initial collegiate lymphological consultation as a preventive measure, ideally before the appearance of any signs or symptoms. The consultation can identify even latent signs of lymphatic distress; in the case of lymphoedema, acting preventively can prevent the progression of the condition.
Finally, if there is already a diagnosis of lymphoedema or lipoedema, the initial consultation is still essential for understanding the exact stage of the condition and defining a personalized care plan at the Clinica Linfologica Italiana in Padua.
