THE THERAPEUTIC PROGRAMME FOR LYMPHOEDEMA IN PADUA

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by abnormalities in the lymphatic system. It is characterized by a slowdown or blockage of lymphatic circulation. It primarily affects the limbs and can manifest on one or both sides, but it can also involve other body areas.

The Clinica Linfologica Italiana in Padua specializes in collegial diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment of lymphoedema. We have been one of the first clinics in Europe to specialize in this lymphatic condition: since 1986, we have assisted over 26,000 patients affected by lymphoedema, primarily of the secondary type, which typically arises after oncological surgery.

Over the last 35 years, we have developed a clinical protocol capable not only of treating the condition but also of stabilizing and halting the progressive tissue degeneration typical of lymphoedema.

Have you undergone oncological surgery involving lymph node removal and want to take preventive action, or are you already affected by lymphoedema? Care at the Clinica Linfologica Italiana in Padua begins with the initial lymphological consultation, during which we can assess your clinical situation and propose a personalized treatment if necessary.

THE THERAPEUTIC PROGRAMME FOR LYMPHOEDEMA AT THE CLINICA LINFOLOGICA ITALIANA

For many years, manual lymphatic drainage and compression bandaging have been at the core of our treatments (our former name was the Centro Medico di Linfodrenaggio Manuale). Until about ten years ago, these were indeed the only two tools that therapists could use to slow the progression of the condition.

Today, however, we know that manual and compression treatment is just a small part of the entire lymphological rehabilitation journey. Research has demonstrated how essential it is to support the person affected by lymphoedema, not just the condition itself.

Unlike other rehabilitation centres, the Clinica Linfologica Italiana treats the patient through a multidisciplinary therapy approach. Often, many patients with lymphoedema who undergo only lymphatic drainage treatments combined with bandaging or compression therapy initially appreciate the positive results, but later realise how these results do not last over time.

LYMPHOEDEMA: THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROTOCOL AT THE CLINICA LINFOLOGICA ITALIANA

Our approach is particularly effective because it is multidisciplinary and focuses on the complete care of the patient through a comprehensive clinical programme that includes a personalized combination of:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage and bandaging therapies.
  • Gym and water therapies.
  • Outdoor Lymph Walking.
  • Mechanical therapies.
  • Nutritional counseling.
  • Psychological support.
  • Sessions on raising awareness of the condition and the best strategies for managing it.
  • Periodic reevaluation of results using advanced diagnostic systems.

To date, there is still no definitive cure for lymphoedema.

However, a multidisciplinary therapy approach is the only useful and effective method for the long- term treatment of the condition, aiming for a return to a more acceptable quality of life for the patient.
