SPORTS AND MOVEMENT IN LYMPHOLOGICAL REHABILITATION

Powerful Allies in the Therapeutic Programme

Getting the entire body moving is one of the key elements in the treatment of lymphoedema and lipoedema.

Targeted physical activity is part of the care protocol for each patient. It is always conducted safely and with the guidance of qualified therapists.

Staying fit not only helps the body regain well- being but also improves mood. Practicing sports in a group, as proposed by the training sessions at the Clinica Linfologica Italiana in Padua, allows individuals to share joyful moments with others facing the same issues.

The multidisciplinary approach of the Clinica Linfologica Italiana, which integrates physical activity with a proper nutritional approach and psychological support, enables action on the patient’s lifestyle, leading them to adopt healthy behaviours that are helpful for coping with chronic conditions such as lymphoedema and lipoedema.

HOW MUCH EXERCISE IS SUITABLE FOR LYMPHOEDEMA AND LIPOEDEMA?

For each patient, although with subjective timing and recommendations, physical activity is advised approximately three times a week, lasting at least 45 minutes per session. This is because the body begins to burn fat only after 30 minutes of exercise.

Patients at the Clinica Linfologica Italiana are suggested the most suitable forms of exercise for them, which may include swimming (individual or group sessions), outdoor activities such as Lymph Walking—special guided walks with the use of Nordic Walking poles—to be conducted according to specific training guidelines developed exclusively by the Clinica, as well as gym workouts, yoga, pilates, and stretching.

WHAT TYPES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ARE SUITABLE FOR LYMPHATIC DISORDERS?

The types of physical activity proposed is always functional to the therapies being administered and does not include disciplines that may cause excessive muscular or joint fatigue.

Physical activity facilitates the reduction of edema, enhancing the effectiveness of treatments; it also helps maintain joint functionality, and reduces muscle atrophy, contributing to the stabilization of the achieved results.

As part of intensive care sessions or regular maintenance treatments, the health protocols of the Clinica Linfologica Italiana therefore include, in synergy with the various specialists and therapists involved, cycles of physical activity and proprioceptive exercises that prepare patients for treatments, which are essential for optimizing the effectiveness of decongestion therapies.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY UNDER THE EFFECT OF BANDAGING AND ELASTIC BANDS

Almost always, physical activity is performed under the effect of multi-component bandaging or with elastic bands.

In therapeutic bandaging, muscle contraction and the resulting increase in volume create an internal force that opposes the compressive action exerted externally by the bandage. This helps facilitate the emptying of the interposed vessels, the reabsorption of oedema, and the consequent modification of the tissues.

In physical activity with non-elastic bandages, the bandages form a rigid, non-extensible “shell” that opposes the internal working pressure exerted by the muscle.

Meanwhile, in activities using elastic bands, the strong elastic tension allows for the creation of significant opposing force against the increase in muscle volume, suitable for high-intensity and short-duration exercises.
